On the vast and colorful continent of Africa, there is a word that echoes beyond the boundaries of space and time. It is a word that carries with it the weight of history and the promise of a more humane future. That word is Ubuntu. Imagine yourself, for a moment, in an African village, surrounded by mud huts and to the sound of drums, on a late afternoon, where the sun is setting over the golden savannahs. This is where the story I want to share unfolds, a story about solidarity, compassion and the essence of humanity, told by journalist and philosopher Lia Diskin during the World Peace Festival in Florianópolis in 2006. A little girl was wandering the streets of a big city, aimlessly, like a boat adrift on an uncertain sea. Without a past to anchor her, or a future to give her hope, she walked, wrapped in a cloak of loneliness and helplessness, longing for a simple glance to confirm her existence, to reveal her essence. * Foto: Marcos Santos/USP Imagens However, it was as if she were a shadow, a discordant note in the rushing symphony of the metropolis, invisible to the people passing by, immersed in their own worlds, walking towards the future or visiting the past, with no feet in the present. They were oblivious to the silent anguish that echoed in the sighs of that lonely little girl. In the midst of the crowd, she found herself alone, isolated in her own fog of invisibility. To protect herself from the icy currents of this indifferent world, she imprisoned herself in a cocoon, suffocating any trace of her longing to be seen and loved, and with it, her self-respect.
